Lanterns, Luxury & White Parties: A Journey Through Southeast Asia
By Shaun Preston
There are some places in the world that stay with you — Chiang Mai is one of them. After experiencing the magic of the Lantern Festival (Yi Peng) two years ago, I knew I had to return. Only this time, I brought someone special: my mom.
We spent three unforgettable weeks in Chiang Mai, soaking in the city’s history, temples, and of course, the incredible street food that makes Northern Thailand a culinary capital. I couldn’t wait to share this magical place with her — especially the Lantern Festival, which was the highlight of her trip. If you missed my first write-up on this glowing spectacle, check it out here:

This time, we stayed in a 3-bedroom penthouse with five-star luxury amenities and the longest rooftop pool I’ve ever seen — with panoramic views of Chiang Mai’s skyline and mountains. Waking up to that view every morning? Unbeatable.
🌴 From Lanterns to Islands: Boracay, Philippines
After Chiang Mai, we flew to the Philippines to spend December in Boracay, one of the most authentic and unspoiled beach destinations in the world.
We stayed in a hilltop luxury condo — 2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, private beach access, and an ocean view that looked like a postcard come to life. It was the perfect way to experience Christmas: sun, sand, and serenity.
🎄 Christmas Dinner at the Shangri-La was absolutely next level — white linen service, ocean breeze, and Filipino hospitality at its finest.
🎉 New Year’s in Bangkok – Full Circle
After a magical month, I parted ways with my mom and headed to Bangkok to meet up with my boyfriend, who flew in from Dubai.
We met last year at the legendary White Party in Bangkok, so returning together for our second time felt surreal.
We stayed in a stunning luxury hotel overlooking the city, celebrated New Year’s in style, and made even more unforgettable memories — the kind that remind you why you travel in the first place.
Final Thoughts
This trip reminded me that some experiences are worth repeating — and even better when you share them with the people you love. From spiritual lanterns in Chiang Mai to a tropical Christmas in Boracay, to ringing in the New Year in electric Bangkok… Southeast Asia delivered once again.
📍If you ever get the chance: go.
Bring someone special. Stay somewhere beautiful. Live it fully.
